« in absentia » est une œuvre géonarrative. Une carte Google Maps est proposée aux lecteurs. Sur la carte, différents symboles apparaissent tels une porte, un camion, une photo de poignée de porte, une enseigne « À louer ». Chaque image fait apparaître un texte sur la carte.
Différentes sections du site web mènent à des cartes différentes. L'accueil montre une carte qui est un amalgame de plusieurs images et textes. La section « à louer » mène à une carte avec seulement des enseignes « à louer ». La section « à vendre » présente une carte avec des numéros 55-X (x étant n'importe quel chiffre) et quelques autres illustrations. Les sections « perdu », « trouvé » et « vide » présentent, quant à elles, un amalgame d'illustrations et de photographies.
Le lecteur parcourt donc l'œuvre par sections. Il visite la carte et choisit les textes qu'il veut lire en cliquant sur les images superposées à la carte.

« "in absentia" is a web-based writing project by J. R. Carpenter, with guest authors: Lance Blomgren, Andy Brown, Daniel Canty, gambletron and Colette Tougas. This work addresses issues of gentrification and its erasures in the Mile End neighbourhood of Montreal. It was created with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and presented within DARE-DARE's Dis/location: projet d'articulation urbaine 2008. The opening launch party was June 24, 2008 in the parc sans nom entre Saint-Laurent et Clark, entre Arcade et Van Horne. « A number of the stories in "in absentia" also appear in my first novel, Words the Dog Knows, published by Conundrum Press (Montreal) Fall 2008. A launch party celebrating the completion of both these projects was held on Friday, November 7, 2008, at Sky Blue Door. « For a dog's age we lived around the corner from the Berlin restaurant. Every night we walked past on "The Civilized Walk". No sticks, no balls, no games. Just pissing and sniffing, pissing and sniffing, up one side of Waverly and down the other. One night we were waiting for the light at Fairmount and Saint-Urbain and two old guys came out of Berlin clutching brown paper doggie bags. What's your dog's name? They wanted to know. Red-faced and jovial, full of sausage and Schlitz. Isaac. Isaac? Hey Abe, this dog's Jewish! Give this dog some schnitzel. Berlin's gone now. The wall has fallen, as it were. And what do we care? A thousand times or more we walked by and never once stopped to read the menu. There's a new place now, with fake tin ceilings, posh dark wood paneling and ivory cloth covered chairs. The dog pisses on the side of the building all the same and waiting for the light to change we still think: Hey Abe, give this dog some schnitzel. »
