Sur un fond d'écran dont la moitié supérieure est blanche et dont la moitié inférieure est rouge, des lettres, des mots et des vers écrits en noir défilent vers le bas tels une pluie. Des carrés et rectangles noirs apparaissent par courtes intervalles à la lisière des deux moitiés d'écran, bloquant momentanément la lecture du texte texte qui se trouve derrière eux. Le lecteur peut balayer l'écran, ce qui fait apparaître des mots en trois dimensions qui montent l'écran en suivant les mouvements des doigts du lecteur. Ces mots laissent une trace beige, montrant leur parcours sur l'écran. Appuyer sur l'écran fait apparaître des mots écrits en gras et en rouge, mots qui flottent momentanément sur le reste des lignes de texte.

The World That Surrounds You Wants Your Death takes its cue from Allen’s observation of what it means for a culture to live, generation after generation, in an environment that actively strives for that culture’s demise. Now that I have small children, I find myself increasingly called upon to explain to them why it might be an issue that they are Cherokee & Mohawk (but not that they are also Italian), or that they are brown, and that they live in a place (Quebec) that is culturally and legislatively hostile to those others who are not Francophone, within a larger North American context that only sees “The Indian Problem”.
“Are there sharks in the ocean?” they ask, and I have to admit that there are.
